1. Eagle Creek Park
Located a little under 13 miles northwest of the downtown area, Eagle Creek Park is one of the most popular green areas among Indy locals, and one that can be reached in about 20 minutes by car. Established in the early 1960s and covering an area of almost 4,000 acres, Eagle Creek Park welcomes over 1,2 million visitors each year from all over the country.

Some of its most popular spots include a bird sanctuary, a zipline and adventure park, a golf club, and a rowing center. 2. Fort Harrison State Park
Established in what were once the grounds of a U.S. Army post in the northeastern outskirts of Indianapolis, Fort Harrison State Park has become one of the most popular weekend escapes among Indy locals and visitors to the city. Located about 13 miles northeast of the city center, this nature reserve can be reached in a little over 20 minutes by car, driving along route I-70.
Once you make your way to the entrance of Fort Harrison State Park, it is a good idea to ask for a map of the area, so you can easily get around and check out its attractions, including a former Citizen’s Military Training Camp, as well as buildings from the old Fort Benjamin Harrison. This state park welcomes about 900,000 visitors each year and is a great spot for hiking, mountain biking, fishing, and wildlife photography.
3. Virginia B. Fairbanks Art & Nature Park
Established in 2010 and spanning an area of about 100 acres, Virginia B. Fairbanks Art & Nature Park is one of the most popular green areas among Indianapolis residents, thanks to its centric location and beautiful gardens. Located a little over five miles from the downtown area, this park can be reached in 15 minutes by car.
