Certification starts as an eligibility test, not as a sticker added at the end. The car has to be within six model years of the current one, the odometer has to read 80,000 or under on the day you take it home, and the 182-point inspection has to be behind it before it appears in a listing at all. Plenty of trades never qualify. That is the point of it.

The clock is the part people misread. Powertrain protection is counted from the day the car originally went into service under its first owner, so a car first sold three years ago has already used three of those seven. A brand-new Acura carries 4 years or 50,000 miles of cover on the vehicle as a whole, and 6 years or 70,000 miles on the engine and transmission. Set the certified engine-and-transmission term against that new-car one and it is longer on both the years and the miles, though part of it has already run by the time you buy.
