Why Move Over Laws Were Created

Move Over laws are being talked about more and more. At Ed Martin Acura, we’re always surprised to hear that so many people don’t know what they are. The laws are designed to keep first responders safe in the line of duty in our town and all across the country.

Traffic and emergency stops are some of the most dangerous things that law enforcement officers and first responders can do. Over 100 officers have been struck and killed in the past decade. The Move Over laws originated in South Carolina and, since then, every other state has enacted laws as well.

The laws identify that if there is an emergency vehicle, you need to make a lane change so that you are not immediately adjacent to the emergency vehicle. If you cannot safely make a lane change, you need to slow to a reasonable speed. Fines of up to $500 can be given if you don’t follow the laws.
